Tiny Rebel Games have today released a downloadable update for their hit handheld puzzle video game Doctor Who: Legacy. Set between the events of last year's beloved 50th Anniversary Special The Day of the Doctor and the 2013 Christmas Special The Time of the Doctor, the ambitious title brings together Doctors from throughout the history of the BBC science-fiction drama to prevent their oldest and deadliest enemies from taking control of time itself.
If you haven't already picked up Legacy on your iPhone, Android mobile device or Kindle, there's honestly no better time (no Who-themed pun intended) than right now. While the game already boasted a considerable number of levels based on episodes from Seasons Six (2011) and Seven (2012-2013) of the show before today's update, the patch brings with it an astounding amount of new content based on Season Five (2010) and even some stories which aired long before the 2005 revival. Here's a full round-up of all of the new goodies you can expect to find should you load up Legacy from now onwards:
- A new story arc called The Rise of the Master introduces (you guessed it) the Master into the fray, and better yet, it's not limited to John Simm's modern incarnation of the character either. Fans will get the chance to enter in a round of combat with both Roger Delegado's and Geoffrey Beever's (The Deadly Assassin and The Keeper of Traken) versions of the rogue Time Lord, plus there'll be a wealth of other Who villains new and old littered throughout the storyline including the Weeping Angels, the Ood and the Zygons! If you can't find the Season Five levels containing this arc on the app just yet, then don't worry, as they're due to be uploaded onto iTunes and the Kindle Store at midnight on Friday April 18th.
- The Perks System will award additional points to players whenever they manage to link up a full horizontal line's worth of gems of the same colour, providing us with an even greater incentive to return to some of the campaign's earlier, less challenging levels in order to acquire more XP for the daunting obstacles that will soon enter our path.
- As if Legacy didn't offer up enough in the way of difficulty in its later levels already, an Expert Mode has been added in Version 2.0 to ensure that anyone who's starting to rest on their laurels will be put to the test once again. A variety of alternate versions of pre-established levels will place greater pressure on players to demonstrate their abilities in a shorter window of time and with less opportunities to chain gems available than ever before...
- We've saved the best new feature until last, though- on top of the versions of the Doctor who were already available to unlock in the game's original update (they were/are the Eleventh, the Tenth, the Eighth, the Seventh, the Sixth and the Third, for those wondering), Tiny Rebel have added John Hurt's War Doctor (2013), Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor (2005), Patrick Troughton's Second Doctor (1966-1969) and William Hartnell's First Doctor (1963-1966) into the mix. As ever, seasoned fans will have to put in a substantial amount of time and effort to unlock these ex-Doctors, but with no new episodes on the immediate horizon, we sincerely doubt that this will prove to be much of a problem for hardcore Whovians!
Doctor Who: Legacy is available now for iOS, Android and Kindle devices, whereas Doctor Who will return to BBC One for its action-packed eighth season this Autumn.
