Will Starkiller or Darth Bane appear in a big-screen galaxy far, far away anytime soon?
Screenplay artist and executive producer Simon Kinberg has this week revealed details about how Walt Disney Pictures' impending science-fiction movie Star Wars Episode VII (and future instalments in the series) will deal with its franchise's controversial canon, including the much-debated Expanded Universe which emerged in the absence of big-screen storylines between 1983 and 1999.
Chatting with IGN over at the Wondercon entertainment convention (think ComicCon but ever so slightly more indie) in the States, Kinberg didn't precisely confirm or deny whether the Star Wars 'EU' (which entails licensed storylines depicted in video games, novels, TV shows and other mediums) will have any direct influence over the events of Episode VII, but did nonetheless indicate that director J.J. Abrams and his production team would be taking a different approach with their narrative. Here's what the producer had to say on the matter: "For me, [...] it was all about honouring the original movies and yet wanting to take a step forward, too, and tell a new story. [The EU] is not off limits. It's certainly inspiring, and I'm working on a new animated show for [Disney] as well - Star Wars: Rebels - that will take inspiration from everywhere." Stay tuned for more details on Abrams' revival of George Lucas' iconic franchise as Episode VII commences production here in the UK next month.
Star Wars Episode VII reawakens the Force in cinemas worldwide on December 18th, 2015.
