Game of Thrones Season Four Episode 9 Title Announced

Castle Black was once an impenetrable fortress, but no more. Can it survive the oncoming siege?
HBO Studios have today announced the title of the penultimate episode of the fourth season of their critically lauded fantasy drama Game of Thrones. Based loosely on George R.R. Martin's novels A Storm of Swords Part 2: Blood and Gold and A Feast for Crows, the new series examines the aftermath of the devastating Red and Purple Weddings and the consequences that the pair of fateful ceremonies will have for the future of Westeros.

It should come as no great surprise to anyone who has analysed the structure of previous seasons of the show, or to anyone who has read Martin's printed texts either, that the ninth instalment of Season Four is titled "The Watchers on the Wall". As ever, we will stay clear of spoiler-heavy territory here, but suffice to say that over at Castle Black, the Night's Watch have evidently been preparing for a momentous battle against the seemingly omnipotent army of Wildlings who are moving closer to their base of operations with each passing day. Since previous Episode 9's have depicted the execution of Ned Stark, the Battle of Blackwater Bay and the infamous Red Wedding, our bet is that Blood and Gold's Battle of Castle Black will receive its on-screen début here too. Don't be fooled into thinking that this season's remaining surprises will be limited to "Watchers", though: quite to the contrary, we'd wager that you'll eventually concur with us when we assert that the real shocks were still to come in (the currently untitled) Episode 10!

Game of Thrones continues with "First of His Name" this Monday, May 5th on Sky Atlantic at 9pm.
