Jedi warriors, astromech droids and Tie Fighters burst onto Disney XD later this year...Walt Disney Pictures have this week released the first promotional clip for their upcoming science-fiction TV series Star Wars: Rebels. Set between the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005) and Episode IV: A New Hope (1977), the show will chronicle the rise of the Rebel Alliance and the ongoing quest of the Galactic Empire to wipe out each and every remaining member of the Jedi Order.
Contrary to the expectations of many fans, however, this first video preview (taken from the Wondercon showfloor, no less) features a good deal of humour rather than over-emphasising the doom-and-gloom tone which could quite easily pervade a series set in such a foreboding period of the Star Wars timeline. Our first glimpse at Rebels does admittedly come from an unspecified episode, which could mean that things get a lot darker and mirror the tone of Star Wars: The Clone Wars as its first season progresses, but if that were the case, then we suspect that Disney and Lucasfilm would have premièred a clip which reflected such a tonal shift. Nevertheless, we wish the production team the very best of luck as they endeavour to commence the revival of the much-maligned modern incarnation of the franchise with a bang.
