Marvel Studios have this weekend unveiled new details and a second teaser trailer (below) for their upcoming science-fiction superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy. Based in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the latest instalment in Avengers Phase Two will star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Batista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Karen Gillan.
Regardless of whether it's much of a shock, it's reassuring to hear from director James Gunn that Guardians' storyline will have substantial implications for the future of the MCU. Thanos (a seemingly omnipotent adversary who featured in the post-credits sequence of Avengers Assemble) will apparently be "the head of the snake" in terms of the hierarchy of the legions of villains battling the titular team of renegade heroes in the Summer blockbuster. As if the news of the Master of Death's presence weren't enough to keep fans' appetites sated for now, Gunn went on to confirm that his much-anticipated production is "directly connected to The Avengers 3". Speculation has been rife recently that Guardians wouldn't so much affect Avengers: Age of Ultron as provide a segueway into the third phase of Avengers films, and judging by Gunn's assertion, that's precisely the case. Indeed, the notion of a series of films based on the Infinity Gauntlet comic-book arc was teased in Avengers Assemble and Thor: The Dark World, and we'll keep you posted with all of the latest developments regarding the MCU's imminent future as and when they come!
